ABSTRACT This paper presents part of the results of a research project on the identity of the urban middle class Brazilian women, and on how they perceive maternity, close relationships, sexuality, marriage and career, among other aspects of their lives. We interviewed 25 university students, aged 18 to 28, and enrolled in different courses of private and public universities of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The interviews were taped recorded and transcribed and the resulting texts were analyzed according to the following categories: maternity; sexuality; family; close relationships; physical appearance; professional career. The discourse analysis pointed to the fact that new attitudes and behaviors on the part of women are seen as not only possible, but also as desirable. However, their acceptance conflicts with old discourses that used to define women's and men's identities. As a result, for our interviewees, contemporary women should be multiple if they want to fulfill theirs and society's expectations: a competent professional, a cult, intelligent and sensuous woman, a good housekeeper and mother, and an affectionate companion. Segundo Hall : the notion that identity has to do with people that look the same, feel the same, call themselves the same is nonsense.

Foram entrevistadas sete mulheres com e sem filhos. Contatou-se que a carreira profissional contribuiu para a independência financeira e emocional da mulher, além de possibilitar novos relacionamentos sociais. Seven women workers, with and without children, were interviewed. Two categories were identified: the meaning of paid work and the relation between paid work and motherhood. It was possible to verify that the professional career contributes to the economic and emotional independency of the women interviewed, besides enabling new social relationships. Moreover, the women tended to understand motherhood as a sacrifice, since they would need to give up their professional career temporarily to take care of their child. We conclude that home chores equally divided between the couple might contribute to women in their professional growth, without giving up motherhood. Fueron entrevistadas siete mujeres con y sin hijos. Fueron identificadas dos categorías: significado del trabajo y relación entre el trabajo y la maternidad.
